Pigmentation Therapy

What is Melasma?

Melasma is an irregular increase in pigment in the dermis of the skin, which is light brown, dark brown, or gray in color, and usually develops gradually and symmetrically on both sides of the face. Although it can occur in men, it mostly occurs in women and is caused by various factors such as ultraviolet rays, stress, and pregnancy.

Epidermal Melasma

Melasma shallowly deposited in the epidermis, the skin’s surface.

Dermal Melasma

Melasma that settles deep into the dermis of the skin.

Combinational Melasma

Complex types of blemishes deposited in both the epidermis and dermis.

When melanin deposition occurs in the epidermis, the border of the freckle is relatively clear and has a brown tint, which is called epidermal melasma. If pigmentation occurs in the dermis, the border is unclear and has a slightly gray or cloudy brown color, which is called dermal melasma. If the epidermal and dermal types occur simultaneously, it can be said to be combinational melasma.

Treatment of Melasma

For challenging to treat conditions such as dermal-type melasma or complex-type melasma, laser treatment may inadvertently stimulate the skin and worsen the darkening. Laser toning, however, breaks down blemish cells deep within the skin gently, multiple times, to stimulate collagen regeneration alongside the treatment. This approach not only boosts skin elasticity but also provides additional benefits such as pore reduction or lifting.

THE PLUS Tribeam K Laser

Three laser modes are available to suit various types of blemishes.

The most significant advantage of this method is its ability to treat all symptoms simultaneously using a three-mode wavelength laser: KTP, long pulse, and Genesis. This can help reduce potential side effects typically associated with laser treatments. While the treatment usually involves 3 to 5 sessions spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart, this can vary depending on the skin condition. After an average of 5 treatments, patients typically enjoy a brighter complexion, reduced dark spots, and improvements in blemishes or acne marks.

Freckles and Blemishes

What are Freckles and Blemishes?

Freckles are a condition in which melanocytes in the epidermis produce an excess of pigment. Blemishes refer to pigmentation issues that are often challenging to diagnose definitively, such as freckles and age spots. Generally, the treatment for blemishes closely resembles the treatment for freckles.

Treatment of Freckles and Blemishes

After applying an anesthetic ointment and waiting for about 30 minutes, freckles are treated using either an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or a Tri-beam K laser, followed by a soothing skin treatment. The treatment induces the formation of a dark scab, darker than the initial freckle, at the site of the pigmentation. However, after 7 to 10 days, the scab naturally falls off, resulting in the disappearance or lightening of the freckles or blemishes.

Precautions After Treatment

There may be redness and burning after the procedure, but it quickly disappears with a cold compress. It is best to avoid saunas, steam rooms, or exercise that causes excessive sweating. When going out, be sure to apply sunscreen because there is a risk of pigmentation. It is a good idea to pay attention to moisturizing and providing nutrition with regenerating cream, moisturizing cream, and soothing packs. Scabs and swelling are natural phenomena, so leave them alone until they subside naturally.
